When a business actually needs custom development (and when it doesn't)

It's tempting to think that if a standard product doesn't do exactly what you need, the answer is to 'build something custom'. Sometimes that's true. Many other times, what's actually needed is configuring what already exists better.

Signs you DO need something custom

• Your business has a very specific process that no standard product covers (an integration with an in-house system, a particular approval flow)
• You've already tried several standard tools and they all fail at the same specific point
• The feature you need is the core of your business, not an extra — it's worth investing in it being exactly as you need it

Signs you probably DON'T need it (yet)

• What you're after is 'looking different' rather than 'working different' — that's usually a configuration matter, not development
• You haven't fully tested whether the standard product already solves 90% of the problem
• The custom development quote is several times what you'd gain by solving it this way

The question that actually matters

Before asking for a custom development quote, it's worth asking directly: "does something that already exists solve this, even at 80%?". 80% solved today is usually worth more than 100% custom in three months — especially if the remaining 20% isn't critical to day-to-day operations.
